Southern US Dirt Dish
Southern US Dirt Dish
Circa last quarter 19th century-first quarter 20th century southern US redware or dirt dish, likely North Carolina with a crackled surface, knife marks and glaze loss, creating a striking pattern radiating out from the black center. This is a primitive dish, made for and marked by use over time.
Condition: As mentioned, there is crazing in the glaze, along with knife marks, scratches, and glaze loss and old chips that are, along with the unglazed bottom and rim now black from use over a fire. Please note: this glaze is lead based and the dish should not be used for serving food.
