Porcelain Faux Bois Pitcher with Staple Mends
Porcelain Faux Bois Pitcher with Staple Mends
Porcelain faux bois pitcher, circa 1850s-1880s, with three metal staple mends. Marked “Gildea” on the bottom, suggesting that it could be Gildea & Walker (Dale Hall Works, Longport, Burslem, Stoke-on-Kent), and accompanied by provenance notes that suggest it is, the bas relief on this piece first appealed to us. Consisting of morning glory vines covering a tree trunk (the body of the pitcher), this theme is carried through to the handle which is formed to resemble a tree branch.
Condition: There are several cracks which have been repaired, as mentioned above, with staples, adding to the overall beauty of this vessel.
